Interlude…

Short time out…

Our family has always talked about taking a road trip in an RV, and in the summer of 2019, following Colin’s graduation from Seattle University, that talk became reality. Unfortunately, Cameron, ever the TFA (Teach for America) loyalist, was mentoring new recruits at their institute in LA at the same time…we missed you, Cameron!

We found an RV online, rented one and hit the road, here’s a short story, Part 1:

Finally, our first RV adventure...5 days of exploring, and 4 nights of living in "half a studio on wheels" in Olympic National Park...

Day 1...drove our rented RV and Colin's car on to the ferry after a Costco run, then on to our first 2-night stop; Riverview RV Park (you can see how lived in we made the RV) on the West side of Olympic NP. It was an interesting experience settling in at the park; hooking up water and electricity, understanding how the system works and realizing there's a finesse to parking the vehicle (proximity to inflow/outflow ports…campers watching knew we were rookies), and trying to remember all the little details discussed at orientation…like: location of the propane valve, turning the dining table and bench into a bed, and a few others.

Setting up inside started with a detailed 2.5 hr cleaning of the RV interior as it was not delivered clean as promised. It looked like the RV hadn’t been used in months; dust and grime was layered on everything, it had to be wet, then dry wiped, that took at least 4 rolls of paper towels…there was no doubt that the RV was now clean. We unpacked our gear and groceries while Debbie prepared dinner, then took a 70+ mile drive on back-roads to view the sunset from the most Northwestern point of the contiguous US, Cape Flattery. The cool, crisp air felt invigorating and was scented with the fragrance of pine and musty moss as we hiked to the point; the view and sunset did not disappoint. Musubi and Costco chicken were on the menu, and dinner was in the parking lot, even for Koda.
